About Kisuri

Kisuri Resort is in Kenya, Wasamo Village on Mfangano Island, and lies on the shores of Lake Victoria (known as Nam Lolwe in the Luo language). This is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest fresh-water lake in the world.  It is divided between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

For 20 years our family made annual visits to Mfangano to strengthen the bonds with our relatives there.  On the insistence of some of the elders, we began to build at Kisuri and opened our executive home in 2017, the first permanent home of its type on the island.  The local Chief at the time was so impressed with our home that he requested permission for the local people of Mfangano Island to visit our place, to experience the striking environment there and to be inspired to reach high and to encourage further development.  From there, Kisuri Resort was born and many developments have taken place since.

We want our guests to share in the 360 degrees, life-changing magical experiences which are unique to Mfangano Island, that we experienced during our visits. These include travel, various activities, nature/environment, cuisine, the culture and caring community, and our community support initiatives.

The People

Mfangano Island has a population of approximately 30,000 people, the majority of whom are Abasuba.  The Abasuba are Bantu-speakers who are believed to have originally moved to this area from Uganda more than 200 years ago. Some of them went to Tanzania first before settling on the island. The name “Suba” means “the people who are always wandering”. The arrival of the Abasuba displaced the Nilotic cattle-herding Luo people, who moved further north.
