Rock Art and Birds

Mfangano Island, in the Suba Central Sub-county, is a site of many ancient migrations and is particularly known for its ancient rock art which represents one of the earliest cultural and historical records of humankind. They are estimated to be between 1000-4000 years old and thought to have been created by early forager-hunters, the Twa people, also known as Batwa.

Visits to rock art sites on the island can be arranged.

The Birds

Mfangano and its neighbouring smaller islands are a bird-watchers paradise in which both land and water bird species can be spotted. The bird life in this region is truly remarkable, with the thickest concentrations being at sunrise and at sunset when the birds return to roost.

Excursions to the bird islands can be arranged.
